Addicted to Bottles, Part One

I'm not sure what kind of a mother videotapes this kind of thing. I'm hoping you won't hold this against me. Some people find crying babies to be very disconcerting. With twins, it is just part of the soundtrack to my life. And honestly, I don't find it amusing when my kids cry. I want happy babies. But this. I just find this soooo stinkin' amusing! (and a little terrifying).

Bug never took a bottle. She went straight from nursing to a sippy cup. But with the twins, I knew I was going to need the freedom and help of a bottle. So Jay and I introduced bottles early into the routine. Over the months, they have grown so addicted to the bottles, it's a little weird, quite amusing, and downright scary.

Let me set up the clip. This happens daily. It's nearing naptime and the twins are happily playing together. Romping around, babbling to eachother and laughing. A truly happy-go-lucky scene. I get some bottles and start mixing formula. Either Bex or Dee will happen to look up to see what I'm doing and that's when their world starts to come apart at the seams. High drama. Utter devastation. It's bottles. The suspense of "will we get them?" and "will it be soon?" is just too much for their precarious, house-of-cards emotional stability.

I usually come around from the kitchen island to the family room to feed them. They follow me as though life is hanging by a thread. Even if it's paining you, watch til the end. Bex is so distraught, he lays down inches from his bottle, and buries his face in the carpet, unable to carry on in a world so cruel as this one. (Try to keep in mind that they were both laughing like monkeys gone bananas only moments before. And, they both know how to pick up bottles and start drinking from them. They just can't make their brains work in the midst of their complete nervous breakdown.)

Watch the drama unfold. Watch Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in their Academy award winning performance in Not Without My Bottle.

Now I'll show you this next clip just so those of you who were made very uncomfortable by that can see that happiness (and quietness) was restored in short order. (And that I'm not some wicked mom of the West just making my babies cry for blogging purposes).

That is too funny! Poor little things, it goes to show ya how bad an addiction can get! Wait 'til they discover chocolate peanut butter ice cream, now there is something to be addicted to!

Ahhhh the good ol days! We are bottle and nearly sippy free now. However, the crying is still the soundtrack of my life :-)

First of all thanks for leaving such a nice, sweet comment on my blog today. You are too kind. And second of all, that is pretty funny. But I so understand how it only takes seconds for things to go awry. I help with my friend's quintuplets once a week, and with five, you've got lots of eruptions of illogical hysteria.....and seconds later things are okay again! One day they will no longer be doing this and you'll wonder WHERE THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!! Precious babies, they are.

YESS! I love it, and I am glad you were willing to share the breakdown haha...they are too (two) funny (punny) muah haha...seriously though so are you...I read everything you write like 10 times and then I go and quote it to my mom and somehow its becoming an inside joke around here...with the melting eyes and all..I'd say you have this writing thing down better than you give yourself credit for...its absolutely addicting!!!!

If you can't find a little entertainment in your kids crying, it would be a very very long day.

Well, count me insensitive, but I think babies make the funniest faces when they cry.

Oh what beautiful children you have! And you must have the patience of a saint :) I think sometimes the motto has to be "whatever gets you through the day" and if it's a bottle, so be it!!
Thank you so much for the wonderful comments you wrote. I felt inspired today by my little, simple life!

Blessings to you and your awesome family, Misha

My hubby is like that too when dinner doesn't come as quickly as he would like!

Hmmm perhaps if I just blend it all together and put it in a bottle, he would be ok!

Love these pictures and congratulations on your win at Chocolate Covered Daydreams, On Being contest!

Judging from the first clip, you must starve them fairly often!! :O Just kidding! How funny! I want the first bottle! No, me!
My "baby" could only crawl backwards at first, so when we were visiting somewhere once, she crawled backwards under their low bed and got stuck. She just cried and cried. I was so amused, I ran and got the camera and took a picture before getting her out. Maybe that's why she's in therapy now...

Haha! Classic! Man, babies really know what they want and WHEN they want it (NOW). :D

I couldn't laugh when Kirsten was a baby being all "new mom" and everything. With Lindsey though, sometimes I can't help it. She does this cute little pouty face, downturned lips that just kills me. Sometimes, if I laugh or smile when I see her do that? She'll change and give me a huge open mouthed smile. Who says laughter isn't contagious?

I'm sorry for laughing. But that was so stinking ADORABLE!

O will cry similarly when he's really hungry for breakfast or dinner. Or wants his sippy of milk before bed. It makes me laugh because he starts up when he sees that we're actually PUTTING IT TOGETHER. Before then, he could have been placidly playing with his toys.

Cracks me up every time.

Oh my, I remember those sounds all too well!! I think mine took bottles until kindergarten (ok, maybe not that long)but this too shall pass. They finally got to where they enjoyed sippy cups just as much.

So very cute that they cry in stereo! So reminds me of my sis and I. When one cried, the other cried (according to my parents.) Will they take sippy cups or they just want their bottles?

I have to say...I do get like that when cheese is just within my reach sometimes...lately Timmy is getting there when he's in his high chair knowing that meat is coming, but not quite there yet.
